Step-by-Step Process of Making a DIY Ottoman Coffee Table
Here’s how to make your own DIY ottoman coffee table at home
Cut the Timber Batten

Once you have all the supplies handy, cut the timber batten to make a supporting frame. Cut two pieces of timber with the miter saw - one should be 120 cm long, and the other two pieces should be 68 cm long each. It is important to properly measure and mark the timber where you need to cut. Then, chop the timber using a miter saw.
Prepare the Base

Apply wood glue on the ends of the shorter battens and attach them with a screw to the long pieces of wood. Then, attach the timber frame that you just made to the plywood base by applying wood glue on the top of the frame. Then, place the plywood base on top. Once done, secure the base and frame with screws. Ensure the plywood and frame are connected with the surface.
Add Upholstery Foam

You can buy foam for the ottoman from a local upholstery shop. This is because you can choose from a variety of options - depending on the firmness. Also, they cut the foam as per your specific needs. Once you have the desired size, stick the foam to the base with a thin layer of spray glue.
Notes | Upholstery foam can be very expensive. So, if you’re looking for an affordable option, you can choose a mattress instead. |
Add the Wadding

Once the foam is glued at the bottom of the ottoman, put the wadding on top. Staple it to the underside of the base. Always start from the middle of each side and work outward. Make sure to stretch and pull as you work so that the wadding is even. After you’re done stapling, cut off the excess with scissors.
Put an Upholstery Fabric

Now, put the fabric on a flat surface with the patterned side down. Place the ottoman base on top, while the foam/wadding side should touch the fabric. Attach the fabric, using a stapler, to the underside of the ottoman. To get an even finish, start stapling in the middle of each of the four sides, just like you did in wadding. Also, make sure the excess fabric is tucked, folded, and pulled around the corners. Moreover, check if the staples are neatly put into place on the underside.
Notes | If you’re using padded fabric, stretching and stapling can be tricky, especially around corner areas. |
Attach the Legs
Once you have covered the ottoman with the fabric, attach the legs or wheels at the base. You can find several legs at your local upholstery shop or online at reasonable prices. Some online stores sell universal mounting legs that go well with all the ottoman coffee tables.
Conclusion
Making a DIY ottoman coffee table is easy if you have the right tools and materials. This guide will help you build your customized coffee table with an ottoman with the fabric, size, and color of your choice.
